Job Description

DESCRIPTION: Amazon Exports and Expansions (AEE) - Science and AI (SAI) team is focused on (i) Day 0 Search relevance experience for newly launched Amazon stores and (ii) Retail Intelligent Advisor, a GenAI based assistant to to improve WW retail operations and reduce cost-to-serve. We design, develop, and deploy high performance, fault-tolerant distributed services used by both Amazon internal and external customers every day.<br><br>Key job responsibilities<br>As an Applied Science Manager, You will:<br>- independently manage a team Applied Scientists and SDEs working to solve complex scientific problems that have a high impact on a business or technology area. Your team is responsible for scientific research, delivering artifacts that inform important business decisions or incorporated into software solutions. <br>- partner with your stakeholders and leadership (both tech and business) to define a vision and tenets that communicate how your team makes decisions. You bridge the gap between science, tech, and business. You understand the business area your team serves (goals, concerns, and aspirations). You establish structures that enable your team to consistently deliver.<br>- focus on strategic development of senior scientists and engineers in your team and provide those interested with opportunities to demonstrate higher level role scope, impact, complexity, and leadership. You build a team that delivers successfully without you. <br>- leverage the broader Amazon scientific community to provide input to model reliability, accuracy, and validity. You build a team culture that focuses on repeatability and reproducibility of research.<br>- tackle ambiguous problems and proactively mitigate risks before they become roadblocks. When confronted with discordant views, you are able to find the best way forward and influence others to follow that path (build consensus). You work to keep your scientific skills relevant. You may manage employees in other locations.<br><br>A day in the life<br>At the heart of this role is delivery. You will be hands-on in driving the delivery of critical business initiatives, managing all aspects of the project such as project planning, risk management, communication, and implementation planning. You will be a technical problem solver on the team, identifying innovative solutions to project deadlocks and resolving issues and constraints through negotiation, diplomacy, and sound judgment. You will be responsible for making project decisions and achieving tactical goals while retaining a strategic focus. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience<br>- Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval and Analytics<br>- Master's degree in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field, or PhD PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
