About the Role

Applied Scientist role on the Kuiper Ground Software & Analytics team, developing science applications like anomaly detection, calibration methods, and performance analytics for satellite ground terminals. Responsibilities include translating ambiguous problems into mathematical formulations, prototyping algorithms, and collaborating with engineers to deploy scalable cloud applications. The role directly impacts global connectivity through Project Kuiper's satellite broadband initiative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate ambiguous problems into well-defined mathematical problems
  • Prototype, test, and implement state-of-the-art algorithms for calibration, anomaly detection, and performance evaluation
  • Provide actionable recommendations via physically-accurate simulations of ground terminal functionality
  • Collaborate with engineers to deploy performant, scalable, and maintainable cloud applications
  • Design, implement, optimize, and operate systems critical to ground terminal uptime and performance

Required Skills & Qualifications

Must Have:

  • Master's degree or above in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics, or equivalent quantitative field
  • 4+ years of deep learning, computer vision, human robotic interaction, or algorithms implementation experience
  • Experience in statistics methodology and applications to business problems or big data
  • Experience with statistical methods (e.g., A/B Testing, Regression)
  • U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or lawful admission as refugee/asylum due to export control requirements

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in new hardware product development
  • Knowledge of ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and ML methods including NLP, computer vision, and text-based models
  • Experience with cloud computing technologies
  • Knowledge of data structures, algorithm design, statistics, and system design
  • Experience in calibration and anomaly detection
  • Expert science/data science development experience in Python
