About the Role

Principal Applied Scientist role leading technical strategy and research for Alexa International expansion. Responsible for defining ML research directions, developing innovative solutions, and mentoring scientific teams. Focuses on scaling Alexa to new countries, languages, and devices through advanced AI/ML techniques.

Key Responsibilities

• Define key research directions and adopt/invent new machine learning techniques
• Develop long-term strategies and persuade teams to adopt those strategies
• Participate in organizational planning, hiring, mentorship and leadership development
• Serve as key scientific resource in full-cycle development from conception to maintenance
• Lead scientific reviews, scrutinize experimental design, and foster shared understanding

Required Skills & Qualifications

Must Have:

• PhD in AI, NLP, machine learning, or computational cognitive science
• 10+ years combined academic and research experience
• Strong publication record in top-tier journals and conferences
• Experience developing software in traditional programming languages (C++, Java, etc.)

Nice to Have:

• 10+ years experience building and deploying ML solutions at scale
• Expert level skills across many Machine Learning methodologies
• Experience delivering complex end-to-end global ML solutions at large scale
