About the Role

Principal Applied Scientist role at Microsoft Shopping focusing on reinventing online shopping experiences using AI. The position involves designing advanced ranking algorithms, building scalable data systems, and leading ML development for product relevance across Microsoft platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and refine advanced ranking algorithms using transformer-based architectures and LLM fine-tuning techniques
• Define and evolve methodologies for automated and human evaluations
• Build and optimize pipelines that transform massive product and interaction logs into structured datasets
• Partner with engineering teams to deploy models at scale and optimize inference for latency targets
• Provide technical leadership, coach top talent, and raise the bar for research and engineering practices

Required Skills & Qualifications

Must Have:

• Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering or related field with 8+ years experience OR Master's with 6+ years OR Doctorate with 5+ years
• 6+ years of experience utilizing Python
• 2+ years of experience with machine learning algorithms and statistical methods
• 2+ years of experience with information retrieval/recommendation systems/NLP or A/B testing

Nice to Have:

• Master's Degree with 12+ years experience OR Doctorate with 8+ years experience
• Experience with information retrieval, recommendation systems, NLP, and A/B testing
• Domain knowledge in e-commerce, retail, or online advertising
• Experience building large-scale data pipelines or distributed ML systems on cloud infrastructure
• Familiarity with transformer models, LLM fine-tuning, and model compression/optimization methods
