About the Role

Principal Hardware Development Engineer serving as technical authority for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems at Microsoft Quantum. Responsible for design oversight, leading complex hardware projects, and driving engineering excellence. Combines deep UHV expertise with system-level thinking and project leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as primary technical reviewer for UHV hardware designs
  • Lead major hardware development projects coordinating multiple engineers
  • Own technical roadmap for improving existing tools quality and performance
  • Drive engineering excellence through process and methodology improvements
  • Work closely with suppliers to ensure quality and schedule adherence

Required Skills & Qualifications

Must Have:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or related field OR equivalent experience
  • Solid experience in UHV system design, fabrication, and validation
  • Strong understanding of vacuum physics, sealing technologies, and material compatibility
  • Proven ability to review complex designs and identify potential issues

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in semiconductor or scientific instrumentation industries
  • Familiarity with CAD tools and simulation (FEA, thermal, structural)
  • Track record of leading process improvement or engineering excellence initiatives
