About the Role
Principal Hardware Development Engineer serving as technical authority for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems at Microsoft Quantum. Responsible for design oversight, leading complex hardware projects, and driving engineering excellence. Combines deep UHV expertise with system-level thinking and project leadership.Key Responsibilities
- Act as primary technical reviewer for UHV hardware designs
- Lead major hardware development projects coordinating multiple engineers
- Own technical roadmap for improving existing tools quality and performance
- Drive engineering excellence through process and methodology improvements
- Work closely with suppliers to ensure quality and schedule adherence
Required Skills & Qualifications
Must Have:
- Master's or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or related field OR equivalent experience
- Solid experience in UHV system design, fabrication, and validation
- Strong understanding of vacuum physics, sealing technologies, and material compatibility
- Proven ability to review complex designs and identify potential issues
Nice to Have:
- Experience in semiconductor or scientific instrumentation industries
- Familiarity with CAD tools and simulation (FEA, thermal, structural)
- Track record of leading process improvement or engineering excellence initiatives
